The Gujarat Gazette is the official journal of the Government of Gujarat — a periodically published record in which the government notifies official matters. Among many other things, it publishes change-of-name notifications submitted by individuals. When your name change appears in the Gazette, it becomes part of an official, published government record.
For a person changing their name, the practical value is simple: the Gazette notification is a recognised documentary proof that your old name and new name belong to the same individual. Most authorities across Gujarat and India accept it as supporting proof when you go to update your Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank and other records.
