7 Common Myths About Gujarat Gazette Name Change

A lot of misinformation surrounds name changes. Here are seven common myths, corrected.

Setting the record straight

Name-change advice online is often confusing or plain wrong. Here are seven myths we hear regularly, with the accurate position.

Myth 1: "One Gazette automatically updates all my documents."

Fact: No. A Gazette is proof of your name change. Each document — Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank — is updated separately with its own authority.

Myth 2: "A Gazette guarantees my application will be approved."

Fact: No responsible service can guarantee a government outcome. A Gazette provides recognised proof, but the decision to update or accept rests with each authority under its rules.

Myth 3: "A Gazette resets my Aadhaar name-update limit."

Fact: It does not. Where the Aadhaar name-update limit is exhausted, UIDAI considers requests only through its exception-handling process, and approval rests with UIDAI. A Gazette can support the request but does not unlock the limit.

Myth 4: "Every name change needs a Gazette."

Fact: Not always. A minor spelling error can often be corrected directly by the department, and some updates accept a marriage certificate. A good consultant tells you when a Gazette isn't needed.

Myth 5: "A newspaper advertisement isn't necessary."

Fact: For most name-change Gazettes, a newspaper advertisement is part of the process. Its cost is separate and depends on your city and the newspaper.

Myth 6: "It doesn't matter how my old name is written in the Gazette."

Fact: It matters a great deal. For an Aadhaar update, the old name in the Gazette should match your current Aadhaar record exactly — spelling, initials, spacing and sequence. Getting this wrong is a common cause of rejection.

Myth 7: "Express means the government will publish it faster."

Fact: Express prioritises the steps we control (preparation and filing). The Government Press's own publication timeline is outside anyone's control.

The honest takeaway

A Gazette is a useful, recognised tool — but it isn't magic, it isn't always required, and it never guarantees an authority's decision. Ask for honest advice specific to your case.
