One of the most confusing points in a name change. Here's the honest, plain-English answer β and why it depends entirely on where you'll use it.
India has two kinds of gazette that come up in name changes: the Central Gazette (the Gazette of India) and the Gujarat State Gazette. They are published by different authorities and serve different purposes β and which one you need depends entirely on where you intend to use your name change. Anyone who tells you there is one universal answer for everybody is oversimplifying.
| Central Gazette (Gazette of India) | Gujarat State Gazette | |
|---|---|---|
| Published by | Department of Publication (Government of India), Part IV β Miscellaneous Notices | Directorate of Government Printing & Stationery, Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar |
| Reach | National-level publication | State-level publication |
| Often used for | Certain central-government processes and cases where an authority specifically asks for the Gazette of India | Many everyday name-change updates for residents dealing with Gujarat and common records |
Use this as a guide, not a rule β your specific authority always has the final say:
| Your situation | What usually fits |
|---|---|
| Everyday updates within Gujarat, and many common Aadhaar / PAN / bank / school updates | The Gujarat State Gazette is commonly used and accepted |
| A specific central-government requirement, or an authority that explicitly asks for the Gazette of India | The Central Gazette may be required |
| You're unsure, or you'll use it in several places | Tell us the intended use first β we'll advise the right route before drafting |
Whichever gazette applies, the underlying journey is the same: a notarised affidavit, a newspaper advertisement in most cases, and then the gazette notification β which you use as proof to update your documents one by one.
