India has two kinds of gazette that come up in name changes: the Central Gazette (the Gazette of India) and the Gujarat State Gazette. They are published by different authorities and serve different purposes — and which one you need depends entirely on where you intend to use your name change. Anyone who tells you there is one universal answer for everybody is oversimplifying.

Whichever gazette applies, the underlying journey is the same: a notarised affidavit, a newspaper advertisement in most cases, and then the gazette notification — which you use as proof to update your documents one by one.
