UIDAI & Aadhaar: Name Changes Explained

UIDAI issues and manages Aadhaar. Here's how name changes and corrections work — including the rule most people get wrong.

What UIDAI is

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the statutory body that issues Aadhaar and maintains the Aadhaar database. Because Aadhaar underpins so much verification — bank KYC, PAN linking, subsidies and more — the name on it needs to be correct and consistent with your other records.

Correction vs full name change

UIDAI treats a small correction (a wrong spelling) differently from a full name change. A minor correction can sometimes be made at an enrolment centre with a supporting document you already hold. For a complete change of name, UIDAI generally looks for recognised proof of identity — and a Gujarat Gazette notification is one of the documents commonly used.

The rule that matters most

Where your Gazette is for an Aadhaar update, the old name in the Gazette should match your current Aadhaar record exactly — spelling, initials, spacing and sequence. A mismatch here is a leading cause of rejection.

The name-update limit

UIDAI permits only a limited number of name updates on an Aadhaar. If the limit is exhausted, requests are considered only through UIDAI's exception-handling process, which typically involves an enrolment centre, informing the Regional Office, and that office reviewing the case at its discretion. A Gazette can support such a request as proof of identity, but it does not reset the limit, and approval rests with UIDAI.

How we help

We prepare the Gazette and documentation drafted to match your Aadhaar exactly, and we're honest about what's within our control (accurate documents) versus UIDAI's decision. See our Aadhaar name correction service and the detailed update-limit guide.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Gazette update my Aadhaar automatically?
No. UIDAI updates Aadhaar through its own process using the Gazette as proof of identity. The decision rests with UIDAI.
Why must the old name match my Aadhaar exactly?
Because UIDAI checks the Gazette against your current record. Differences in spelling, initials, spacing or sequence can cause the update to be held.
Can a Gazette reset my Aadhaar name-update limit?
No. Where the limit is exhausted, UIDAI considers requests only through exception handling; a Gazette can support the request but not reset the limit.
