Passport Name Problems — and Why They Happen

The passport is one of the strictest documents when it comes to names. Because it is checked against your other records — and, for travel, against foreign immigration systems — even a small inconsistency can stall an application or create trouble abroad. The most common problems we see fall into a few clear groups: a name mismatch between the passport and Aadhaar/PAN or a marriage/divorce, a blank surname where the surname field is empty, an "FNU" (First Name Unknown) entry that appears when the name structure does not fit the expected given-name-plus-surname format, and a change of name after marriage or divorce.

A Gujarat Gazette is often the tool that resolves these. By formally recording your name — or by establishing a proper split between given name and surname — the Gazette gives you recognised documentary proof that your intended name is correct and consistent. You then present that proof, along with your supporting documents, when applying or reapplying.

We want to be completely straight about one thing: we help with the documentation, but the passport decision itself rests with the Passport Seva / passport authorities. We cannot and do not promise a particular outcome from the passport office. What we can do is prepare your name documentation carefully so your application is as clean and consistent as possible.

In one line

A Gujarat Gazette helps establish one clear, consistent name for your passport — but the passport office makes the final decision on your application.

Understanding "blank surname" and "FNU"

Many applicants in Gujarat and across India traditionally use a single name, or have documents where the surname field is left empty. Indian passport rules and most foreign systems expect both a given name and a surname, so a blank surname can trigger objections, and some records end up showing "FNU" in place of a missing name part. This becomes a real obstacle later — particularly for visas, overseas employment and study. The practical fix is to structure a proper given name and surname through recognised documentation, ideally before a foreign objection is raised, because corrections are far harder once that has happened.

Who this is for

This service suits anyone in Gujarat facing a passport name mismatch, a blank-surname or FNU situation, a name change flowing from marriage or divorce, or an objection asking for documentary proof of a name. It equally helps students and working professionals planning to travel, who want their name structured correctly before a visa stage. If your issue is only a minor clerical error the passport office can fix directly, we will tell you honestly that a Gazette may not be needed.

Honest Guidance

When Does a Gazette Help a Passport Case?

Here is the general picture. Your exact situation is confirmed after we review your documents and the objection, if any.

✅ A Gazette often helps when…

  • Your passport name doesn't match your Aadhaar, PAN or other records.
  • You need to change your name after marriage or divorce.
  • Your surname is blank and needs to be established.
  • An FNU entry needs to be resolved into a proper name.
  • An objection asks for recognised proof of your name.

🚫 A Gazette may not be needed when…

  • It is a minor clerical error the passport office can correct directly.
  • Existing documents already establish your name consistently.
  • The specific requirement is met by another accepted document.
  • Your case actually needs a different step altogether.

Not sure? Share the objection or mismatch and we'll advise the appropriate step — ask for a free check.

How It Works

Step-by-Step: Resolving a Passport Name Issue

From understanding the objection to establishing a clean name and reapplying.

Review the issue

We look at your objection or mismatch and confirm whether a Gazette is the right step.

Documents & drafting

We prepare the affidavit and Gazette draft to establish one consistent, correct name.

Your approval

You check the draft carefully. Nothing is filed until you confirm every detail.

Notary & newspaper

The affidavit is notarised and, where required, a newspaper advertisement is published.

Gazette published

Your name is recorded in the Gazette, giving you documentary proof.

Apply / reapply

You use the Gazette and supporting documents when applying to Passport Seva.

Timeline

How Long Does It Take?

Our part — reviewing the objection, drafting the affidavit, arranging the notary and newspaper, and filing — moves quickly, and the Express package prioritises these stages. Publication in the Gazette then follows the Government Press's schedule. Separately, the passport application itself runs on the passport office's own timeline, which we do not control.

Because two authorities are involved — the Government Press for the Gazette and Passport Seva for the passport — we plan the sequence carefully and give realistic, indicative timelines. We never promise a fixed date for either stage.

Travelling soon?

If you have a visa appointment or travel date, tell us immediately. Careful sequencing and the Express package can help, but always keep a buffer for both the Gazette and the passport office.

Next Steps

After Your Gazette — Applying to Passport Seva

Once your Gazette is published, you use it as supporting proof when you apply or reapply for your passport. It is also worth aligning your other records so everything agrees: if your Aadhaar or PAN still shows the old name, updating those as well helps avoid future mismatches. You can verify current passport requirements directly on the official Passport Seva portal.

A commonly sensible order is to establish the name via the Gazette, update Aadhaar and PAN so they match, and then proceed with the passport. If a foreign visa is the ultimate goal, get the name structure right early — overseas systems are unforgiving about mismatches.

We handle documentation, not the passport decision

We prepare your name documentation to be clean and consistent. The approval, issuance or acceptance of your passport is decided solely by the passport authorities under their rules.

Common Mistakes & Reasons for Objections

Most passport name problems trace back to a handful of avoidable issues.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Leaving Aadhaar/PAN unaligned with the intended passport name
  • Not resolving a blank surname before a visa stage
  • Drafting a name that doesn't match existing records
  • Assuming the Gazette alone completes the passport update
  • Not sharing the objection letter with your consultant

⚠️ Common objection reasons

  • Name mismatch across submitted documents
  • Blank or incomplete surname
  • Insufficient proof for a claimed name
  • Inconsistent spelling or initials
  • Missing supporting document for a name change
From Our Experience

Passport Situations We Handle Regularly

Real, recurring patterns from everyday casework. To protect privacy we never share client names or personal details.

Mismatch · After marriage

Passport and Aadhaar names didn't agree

What we see
An applicant's passport carried her maiden name while her newer records showed the married surname, and the application was held.
How we handle it
We established one consistent name through a Gazette drafted to match the records the passport office checks, then aligned Aadhaar and PAN.
The lesson
Align every record to one name before applying, and share the passport goal upfront.
Blank surname · FNU

Single-name applicant heading abroad

What we see
An applicant with a single name faced a blank-surname problem that risked a visa objection.
How we handle it
We helped structure a proper given name and surname through recognised documentation so the name reads consistently across systems.
The lesson
Sort the surname structure early — it is far harder to fix after a foreign objection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Passport Name Change — Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask us most. Still unsure? Call or WhatsApp us any time.

My passport is on hold for a name mismatch. Can a Gazette help?
Often, yes. A Gazette can establish one consistent name that resolves the mismatch, and you submit it as supporting proof. We assess your specific objection first, because sometimes the fix is simpler and a Gazette isn't required.
What is a "blank surname" or "FNU" problem?
Indian passports and most foreign systems expect both a given name and a surname. If your surname field is empty, or a record shows "FNU" (First Name Unknown), it can trigger objections. We help structure a proper given name and surname through recognised documentation.
Do you guarantee my passport will be approved?
No. We help with the name documentation to make your application clean and consistent, but the passport decision rests entirely with the Passport Seva / passport authorities under their own rules. No responsible service can promise their outcome.
How much does it cost?
Our Gazette packages are ₹3,000 (Standard) and ₹5,500 (Express), inclusive of government fees, e-stamp, affidavit drafting, notary, document preparation, filing and courier. Newspaper advertisement charges and any passport-office fees are separate.
Should I update Aadhaar and PAN too?
Usually yes. Aligning your Aadhaar and PAN with the intended passport name helps avoid future mismatches. We can guide the sequence — see our Aadhaar and PAN pages.
I'm changing my name after marriage for the passport. What's different?
The Gazette should be drafted so your old name matches your existing records and your new name is what you want on the passport. Tell us the passport is the goal at the start so it's prepared correctly — see our marriage name change page too.
How long will it take?
Our documentation stages move quickly, and Express prioritises them. Gazette publication follows the Government Press's schedule, and the passport application runs on the passport office's own timeline. We give indicative timelines and never guarantee a fixed date.
Is a newspaper advertisement required?
For most name-change Gazettes a newspaper advertisement is part of the process. Its cost is separate and depends on your city and the chosen newspaper. We confirm it before proceeding.
I have a visa appointment soon. Can you rush it?
Tell us your date immediately. The Express package and careful sequencing can help, but both the Gazette and the passport office have their own timelines, so we always advise leaving a buffer.
My name is spelled differently on different documents. Does that matter?
Yes — disclose every variation before drafting. Spelling and initial differences are a frequent cause of passport objections, so we plan the drafting to establish one consistent, correct name.
Can I use a Gujarat Gazette for a passport if I live in another state?
A Gujarat Gazette is a recognised government publication. Whether it fits your situation depends on your documents and the passport office's requirements. Tell us your circumstances and we'll advise honestly.
I only have a small spelling error. Do I still need a Gazette?
Possibly not. Minor clerical errors can sometimes be corrected directly. Share the details and we'll tell you honestly whether a Gazette is genuinely needed.
What documents should I keep ready?
Typically your Aadhaar, PAN, existing passport or application reference, any objection letter, a document showing the correct name, and a passport-size photograph. We then give you a precise, case-specific list.
