Passport Application on Hold Due to a Name Mismatch

What's happening

The passport office cross-checks your name against your other documents. When the name on your application doesn't line up with your Aadhaar, PAN, or supporting documents — or with a recent change after marriage or divorce — the application can be placed on hold pending clarification or proof.

Why it happens

• Your name changed (marriage/divorce) but not all records were updated.
• Different documents show different spellings, initials or surname order.
• A blank surname or an "FNU" entry doesn't fit the expected name structure.

How to fix it

1. Read the objection carefully — it tells you what the office needs.
2. Decide the correct name you want on the passport.
3. Establish that name — usually via a Gazette with a supporting affidavit, drafted to match the records the passport office checks.
4. Align Aadhaar and PAN so nothing contradicts your application.
5. Resubmit with the Gazette and supporting documents.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Not sharing the objection letter with your consultant.
• Leaving Aadhaar or PAN unaligned with the intended passport name.
• Assuming the Gazette alone completes the passport update.
