Most name-change cases include a newspaper advertisement. Here's what it is, why it's done, and what it costs.
For most name-change cases, publishing a short advertisement in a newspaper announcing your change of name is part of the process, alongside the affidavit and the Gazette notification. It is a public announcement that you have changed your name.
The advertisement adds a layer of public notice to the change, complementing the official Gazette publication. Together, the affidavit, the newspaper announcement and the Gazette form the recognised documentary trail that authorities look for when you later update your records.
Newspaper advertisement charges are separate from our Gazette service fee, and they are not fixed β they depend on several factors:
In the typical flow, the affidavit is drafted and notarised, the newspaper advertisement is published where required, and the application is then filed for Gazette publication. We coordinate these steps so they line up correctly.
Most name-change Gazettes include a newspaper advertisement. Some corrections handled directly by a department β rather than through a Gazette β do not involve one at all. As always, if your case only needs a simple direct correction, we'll tell you, and there would be no newspaper charge.
Tell us your situation and we'll give you honest guidance β including whether a Gazette is actually needed. No pressure, no obligation.
