An affidavit is a written statement you swear to be true before a notary. In a name change, it is your formal declaration that you are changing your name — stating your old name, your new name, and that both refer to the same person. It underpins the whole process: the Gazette notification and the newspaper advertisement both flow from what the affidavit declares.

The single most important thing about the affidavit is precision. If your old name is written even slightly differently from your Aadhaar or the document you intend to update, that mismatch can carry through into the Gazette and cause a hold later. This is why we ask where you intend to use the Gazette before drafting — so the old name is stated to match your target record exactly.
The affidavit is sworn before a notary, who attests that you signed it. A non-judicial e-stamp of the appropriate value is generally used. We arrange the drafting and notary as part of both our Normal and Express plans, so you don't have to coordinate these separately.
