A vehicle's registration certificate carries the owner's name. Here's how a name difference is reconciled for transfer, insurance or a name change.
The Registration Certificate (RC), issued through the RTO under the Parivahan system, records a vehicle's owner. When the owner's name on the RC differs from their identity documents β after a marriage, or a spelling difference β it can surface at insurance renewal, a transfer or a sale.
The RC (registration certificate) records the vehicle owner's name, and a genuine owner name change β as opposed to selling the vehicle β is made at the RTO through the Parivahan Vahan system, with the Gujarat Gazette as proof. It is recorded as a change of particulars on the existing registration; the registration number does not change and ownership does not move. It is important not to confuse this with a transfer of ownership, which is an entirely different process for a different situation.
The alignment pitfall is the one to watch: your RC should stay consistent with your driving licence and motor insurance. An insurance policy still in the old name against an RC updated to the new name can complicate a claim, where the insurer cross-checks both. So update the motor insurance name alongside the RC, and keep the DL in step too.
For example, after a claim or an accident the insurer will compare the RC, the DL, and the policy. If all three carry the new name and the gazette is on file, the claim proceeds normally; if they disagree, it invites questions exactly when you least want them. Updating the set together, gazette in hand, keeps the vehicle records clean.
