The leaving certificate follows a student for life. Here's how name corrections work — and why deadlines matter.
The school leaving certificate (LC) and mark sheets carry a student's official name and are relied on for admissions, jobs and further study. When the LC name differs from the birth certificate or Aadhaar, it surfaces at the worst time — exam registration, admission or a scholarship.
A minor error can sometimes be corrected directly by the school or board through its own process. A larger change usually needs recognised proof such as a Gujarat Gazette, and for a minor the application is made by a parent or guardian with consent.
A name change on schooling touches two separate layers, and missing one is the classic mistake. The school-leaving certificate (LC) is issued by the school, and the school updates its own register on the strength of the Gujarat Gazette. But the board records for classes X and XII — your mark sheets and passing certificates — sit with the board (GSEB, CBSE, etc.), which runs its own name-correction process with a separate form, fee, and time window.
The board window matters: boards are strict about deadlines measured from result declaration, and a correction sought years later can be harder or need extra affidavits. So if a board certificate is involved, act on it early rather than assuming the school LC alone is enough.
The mismatch surfaces at exactly the wrong moment — college admission or job background verification — when the LC shows the new name but the board mark sheet still shows the old one. For example, a graduate whose degree and LC are updated but whose Class XII mark sheet was never corrected can be flagged during employment verification; fixing all layers together, with the gazette as the common proof, prevents it.
