What's happening
A child's name often appears across the birth certificate, Aadhaar, the school admission register and the leaving certificate. When these disagree, it surfaces at the worst time β exam registration, admission, or a scholarship form β and can hold up the whole application.
Why it happens
- An early spelling error hardened into the school record.
- An informal or short name was used at school.
- A surname change wasn't carried through every record.
Is a Gujarat Gazette required?
It depends on the difference. A minor error can sometimes be corrected directly by the school or board. A larger change usually needs a Gazette β made by a parent or legal guardian with consent β to align the records.
How to fix it
- Decide the child's correct name across all records.
- Guardian applies β a minor's change is made by a parent/guardian with consent.
- Establish the name via a Gazette (or a direct board correction for minor errors).
- Align the school record, Aadhaar and birth certificate.
Deadlines are unforgiving
Board exams, admissions and scholarships work to fixed dates. A mismatch found late can jeopardise a form, so act as early as possible and leave time for both the Gazette and the board's own process.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving corrections until close to a deadline.
- Not aligning the school record with the birth certificate.
- Missing the correct guardian documents or consent.
