What's happening
After marriage, many women update their Aadhaar, passport and bank to a married name β but the degree and mark sheets, issued earlier, still carry the maiden name. Employers verifying credentials, and foreign universities or visa systems, then see two different names and ask you to reconcile them.
Why it happens
- The degree was issued before marriage, in the maiden name.
- Identity documents were updated to the married name.
- A job or visa process compares the degree with current IDs.
- The university record still shows the maiden name.
Is a Gujarat Gazette required?
Often, yes. A Gazette recording your marriage name change is the recognised proof that the maiden name on the degree and your married name are the same person. Some situations are also handled by a 'one and same person' declaration β we'll advise which fits.
How to fix it
- Establish the name link via a Gazette (or a 'one and same person' declaration where suitable).
- Show verifiers the proof connecting the maiden degree name to your married name.
- Consider a university record update if a specific process requires the degree itself to change.
You may not need to change the degree itself
Often you don't need the university to reissue the degree β you need recognised proof that both names are the same person. For study abroad, though, check the specific institution's requirement before deciding.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the degree must be reissued when proof of linkage is enough.
- Not carrying recognised proof to a verification or visa appointment.
- Leaving it until a job offer or admission is at stake.
- Not disclosing both name forms upfront.
See name change after marriage, one & same person and the degree guide; the university and verifier decide under their own rules.
