Your degree and university mark sheets carry your name into employment verification, professional registration and study abroad. When the degree name differs from your Aadhaar or passport, it can hold up a job offer, a visa or an admission.
A university correction process handles genuine errors on its own records. A deliberate name change — after marriage or by choice — usually needs recognised proof such as a Gujarat Gazette, which you then use with the university and other authorities.
A degree or convocation certificate is corrected by the issuing university's examination/records section, not the gazette office. The Gujarat Gazette is your name proof; the university then runs its own procedure — an application, a fee, and sometimes surrender of the original certificate for reissue in the new name. Timelines vary widely between universities and can be slow, so start early if the degree is needed for a deadline.
The pitfall specific to higher education is the document set. Some universities correct the degree certificate but leave the mark sheets untouched, or the reverse. Employers, professional councils, and foreign universities check the whole set, so ask explicitly for every document to be reissued in the new name — degree, consolidated mark sheet, and provisional/migration certificates where they exist.
For overseas study or work this compounds: a later apostille or attestation is done on the corrected university documents, so any document left in the old name becomes a weak link in the chain. For example, an applicant heading abroad should get the degree and all mark sheets corrected and consistent with the gazette before beginning attestation, not after.
