PAN is the record to fix straight after Aadhaar, because the two are constantly checked against each other. Update it right and your tax filing, refunds and KYC keep flowing; leave it mismatched and PAN–Aadhaar linking fails. Here's the exact route, using your Gazette as proof.

PAN and Aadhaar are the two records the rest of your financial life leans on, and they are permanently cross-referenced — for PAN–Aadhaar linking, for filing your income-tax return, and for KYC across banks, mutual funds and demat accounts. The moment they disagree on your name, that cross-referencing breaks: linking fails, refunds can stall, and KYC bounces. That is exactly why the sensible sequence is to settle your Aadhaar first and then bring PAN into line with it, rather than the other way round.
The practical rule that follows is simple but easy to get wrong: update PAN to the same name you've put on Aadhaar, character for character. If Aadhaar now reads one way and you enter PAN even slightly differently, you've created a new mismatch between the two most important records you own. Deciding the exact final form of your name once, and using it identically on both, is what keeps this clean.
PAN changes are handled through authorised service providers on behalf of the Income Tax Department.
You don't apply to the Income Tax Department directly for a PAN card change; you use one of its authorised channels. The two you'll encounter are Protean (the entity formerly known as NSDL e-Governance) and UTIITSL. Both offer the same core service — a correction to PAN data, including the name — and both let you apply online, upload documents, verify (often via Aadhaar-based e-KYC/e-Sign), and pay the fee. Either is fine; many people simply use the one through which their PAN was originally issued, though that isn't required.
Whichever you choose, the request type is the same: the "Changes or Correction in existing PAN data" option, as opposed to applying for a brand-new PAN (you keep the same PAN number — only the printed details change). If you opt for Aadhaar-based e-KYC, your PAN details are pulled to match Aadhaar, which is one more reason to have Aadhaar correct first.
Portal screens change over time, so use the current flow on the chosen channel and the official Income Tax portal as your reference when you apply.
For a PAN name change you'll generally need:
A modest processing fee is payable to the channel (it differs slightly between providers and for Indian vs overseas dispatch). This fee is separate from any documentation service — it's the government-channel charge for processing the correction and issuing the card.
Once submitted, a PAN correction is processed on the department's/channel's own timeline — commonly a couple of weeks, though this varies. You can track it with the acknowledgement number, and an updated e-PAN is typically available before the physical card arrives. The moment your PAN reflects the new name, check that it agrees with your updated Aadhaar and, if the two now match, that PAN–Aadhaar linking is in order. If linking was previously failing because of the mismatch, aligning the names is usually what resolves it — see PAN–Aadhaar not linking for the specifics. If a tax refund had stalled on the mismatch, correcting PAN is generally the unblocking step — see income-tax refund held for a name mismatch.
With Aadhaar and PAN agreeing, your financial identity is on solid ground. The next records are typically your passport and your bank/KYC, followed by anything else that carries your name. Because banks and demat/mutual-fund accounts key off PAN, updating them now — once PAN is correct — keeps everything consistent. GujaratGazette.com is the documentation division of Harsiddhi Services, an independent, Vadodara-based legal-documentation consultancy serving every district of Gujarat and Gujaratis overseas. We are not the Income Tax Department and not a PAN issuing authority — the department and its authorised channels process and decide PAN corrections. What we do is make sure the PAN step is clean: we prepare the Gazette so it reads correctly as proof, we make sure the name you put on PAN matches the name on your updated Aadhaar so the two most important records agree, and we guide you through the Protean/UTIITSL correction so nothing is entered in a way that invites a query. It's coordinated remotely wherever possible, and if your case has a complication — a stalled refund, a stubborn linking failure — we point you to the specific fix. The aim is a PAN that quietly agrees with everything else, which is exactly when you stop thinking about it.
General information, not an Income Tax Department decision — confirm current steps on the official portal.
Send us your PAN and updated Aadhaar name, plus your Gazette details. We'll make sure they line up and guide the correction so linking, filing and KYC keep working — remotely wherever possible.
