How driving-licence names work

The driving licence is issued through the RTO under the Parivahan system and doubles as a common identity and address proof. Because it's checked against Aadhaar in many situations, a name that differs from your Aadhaar can cause problems at verification, insurance and vehicle-related work.

Correction vs change

• A clerical error on the licence is usually corrected through the RTO's own process with a supporting document.
• A genuine name change — after marriage or by choice — is commonly supported by recognised proof such as a Gujarat Gazette, which you then use to update the licence.

Common issues we see

• A married name to be updated after marriage.
• A spelling or initial that differs from Aadhaar.
• A name recorded differently when the licence was first issued.
