Name on a Driving Licence: Corrections & Changes

Your driving licence is a widely-used photo ID, so its name should match your other records. Here's how corrections and changes work.

How driving-licence names work

The driving licence is issued through the RTO under the Parivahan system and doubles as a common identity and address proof. Because it's checked against Aadhaar in many situations, a name that differs from your Aadhaar can cause problems at verification, insurance and vehicle-related work.

Correction vs change

Match Aadhaar first

Because the licence is often verified against Aadhaar, align your Aadhaar name first; then update the licence to the same name for a clean result.

Common issues we see

In Practice β€” The Exact Route

RTO via Parivahan Sarathi β€” a Smart-Card Reissue, Not Just an Edit

A driving-licence name change is handled by the RTO, applied through the Parivahan Sarathi portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) or at the RTO counter, with the Gujarat Gazette as the name proof. Because the DL is a smart card, a name change means a reissue of the card with the corrected details β€” not merely a line edited in a database β€” so expect a fresh card and a short processing period.

The sequencing pitfall is real: your DL name should match Aadhaar and, if you own a vehicle, your RC. A licence updated to the new name while the RC still shows the old one can cause friction at a vehicle transfer, a challan, or an insurance claim, where the names are cross-checked. Decide the exact final spelling once and carry it identically across DL, RC, and Aadhaar.

For example, someone selling or transferring a vehicle soon after a name change is better off aligning the RC and DL together, gazette in hand, so the transfer paperwork doesn't stall on a name that matches one document but not the other.

Official source

For the authoritative process and current requirements, refer to Parivahan Sarathi (Ministry of Road Transport & Highways). Government procedures can change, so always verify the latest there.

How we help

Where a name change underlies the update, we prepare the Gazette and documentation and guide how it aligns with your Aadhaar and the licence. See the RTO / Parivahan guide and, for a mismatch that's already causing trouble, the driving-licence mismatch problem page. The RTO decides the update under its own rules.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Gazette to change my driving-licence name?
Not for a minor correction, which the RTO may handle directly. A genuine name change is commonly supported by a Gazette, which you then use to update the licence.
Should I fix Aadhaar or the licence first?
Aadhaar first, since the licence is often verified against it. Then update the licence to the same name.
Does a Gazette update my licence automatically?
No. The RTO updates the licence through its own process, using the Gazette and documents as proof.
