The birth certificate is the foundation of a person's identity record. Here's how names on it are handled.
Issued by the local Registrar of Births and Deaths, the birth certificate is usually the earliest official record of a person's name and date of birth. School records, Aadhaar and later the passport are all expected to agree with it, which is why a wrong or differing name here causes problems downstream.
Where a name change is the goal, we prepare the Gazette and documentation and guide how it aligns with the birth certificate and other records. For a registrar correction, see how the authority handles it on our Births & Deaths Registrar guide. For children, our minor name change service applies with guardian consent.
Tell us your situation and we'll guide you on the right documentation β including whether a Gazette is even needed.
