What's happening
Credential-evaluation agencies (such as WES and others) assess your Indian degree and mark sheets for study, migration or work abroad, matching the name on them against your passport. When the degree carries a maiden name, an initial, or a spelling that differs from the passport, the evaluation can be held until the difference is explained or reconciled.
Why it happens
- The degree shows a maiden name but the passport a married one.
- An initial is expanded on the passport but abbreviated on the degree.
- A spelling difference between the degree and passport.
- The university record differs from your identity documents.
Is a Gujarat Gazette required?
Often, yes. A Gazette recording the name change is recognised proof linking the degree name and your passport name as the same person. Some cases are handled by a 'one and same person' declaration β we advise which the evaluator and university will accept.
How to fix it
- Establish the name link via a Gazette (or a 'one and same person' declaration where suitable).
- Provide the evaluator with recognised proof connecting the degree name to your passport name.
- Consider a university record update if the evaluator or destination requires the degree itself to change.
Check the destination's requirement
Some evaluators accept a name-linkage document; others, or the destination visa system, may want the degree itself reissued. Confirm the exact requirement before deciding, so you prepare the right thing once.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the degree must be reissued when proof of linkage is enough.
- Not carrying recognised proof to the evaluation.
- Leaving it until an admission or visa deadline.
- Not disclosing both name forms upfront.
See marriage name change, one & same person and the degree guide; the evaluator and university decide under their own rules.
