Names & Identity Terms

The vocabulary of names themselves β€” the differences that cause mismatches, defined.

Most name problems come down to a handful of concepts. Here's what they mean.

Surname
The family name. Changing, adding, removing or establishing a surname β€” after marriage, divorce, or by choice β€” is one of the most common reasons for a Gazette.See: Surname change
Initial
An abbreviated part of a name, such as an abbreviated father's name or surname. Whether it's expanded ('R.' vs 'Rajesh') or abbreviated differs across documents β€” a very common cause of mismatches.See: Add / remove / expand initial
Maiden name
A woman's surname before marriage. When drafting a married-name change, the maiden name should match existing records so the old and new names link cleanly.
FNU (First Name Unknown)
A placeholder some documents use when a name field is incomplete. Many visa systems won't accept it, so it commonly needs the name properly restructured.See: Blank surname & FNU
Blank surname
When the surname field is empty and only a given name is recorded β€” frequently on passports. It triggers visa and overseas objections until a proper surname is established.See: Blank surname & FNU
Alias (Also-Known-As)
A declaration that you are known by two names, both remaining valid. Different from a name change, where one name replaces another.See: Alias declaration
One and Same Person
A declaration confirming that two forms of a name refer to the same individual β€” used to reconcile differences without necessarily changing a name.See: One & same person
Transliteration
Writing a name from one script into another β€” a Gujarati name into English, say. Because there's no single fixed way, the same name ends up spelled several ways across documents.See: Why spellings differ
Correction vs Change
A correction fixes an error in an existing name (often handled directly by the authority); a change adopts a genuinely different name (usually via a Gazette).See: Change vs correction
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an alias and a name change?
A name change replaces your old name with a new one. An alias keeps both names valid and formally records that they refer to the same person.
Why is my name spelled differently on each document?
Most Gujarati names are transliterated into English, and there's no single fixed way to do it β€” so different offices spelled it differently over the years.
Is a blank surname the same as FNU?
They're related. A blank surname means the surname field is empty; 'FNU' is a placeholder some documents use. Both commonly cause visa objections.
