A name change is not finished when the new documents arrive. The records that link your old name to your new one are worth keeping β sometimes for years. Here is what matters and why.

Once the updated cards and certificates land, it is tempting to shred everything in the old name and move on. Resist that. For a while β and for some records, permanently β the paper trail that connects your two names is exactly what proves you are one person. That link is occasionally requested long after the change itself is complete.
The awkward cases almost always involve history: an old insurance policy, a property document, a provident-fund balance, a pension, or an academic qualification earned under the previous name. Years later, when you claim or transfer one of these, the institution needs to see that the old name and your current name belong to the same person. The Gazette plus the old document in that name is what proves it. Throw the old document away and you can be left proving your own past.
Keep the physical Gazette and affidavit flat and dry in a single labelled folder. Scan everything at readable quality and store the scans in at least two places β for example a secure cloud folder and an offline copy. A digital locker service is convenient, but treat it as a copy, not the only copy.
Permanently. It is the anchor proof that your old and new name belong to one person, and it can be requested years later when you claim or transfer something held in the previous name.
It is better not to, for several years. Superseded documents in your old name may be needed to prove continuity of assets, policies, qualifications or fund balances earned under that name.
Keep both. Store the physical original safely and keep clear scans in at least two places. Treat any digital locker as an additional copy, not your only one.
If you are unsure which old records to keep for a future claim or transfer, ask us. We will tell you what is worth preserving in your specific case.
