Election Commission & Voter ID: Name Corrections

The Election Commission maintains the electoral roll and issues Voter IDs. Here's how name corrections work.

What the Election Commission does

The Election Commission of India (ECI) maintains the electoral roll and issues the Voter ID (EPIC). When your Voter ID name is wrong or no longer matches your other records β€” an old spelling, or a maiden name after marriage β€” it can cause issues when the card is used as ID or during verification.

Correction vs name change

A minor correction to the electoral roll can often be requested directly through the Election Commission's own process (commonly via its correction form/portal). For a genuine name change, recognised proof such as a Gujarat Gazette supports the request.

Aim for consistency

Keep your Voter ID, Aadhaar and PAN showing one consistent name, so verification anywhere goes smoothly.

Who decides

Electoral-roll updates are processed and decided by the Election Commission under its own rules. We prepare the supporting documentation.

How we help

We help establish one correct name and prepare the proof to support the correction. See our spelling correction and surname change services, and the Voter ID problem page.

Official source

Always verify current requirements on the official portal: Election Commission of India (eci.gov.in) β†—. Harsiddhi Services is independent and not affiliated with this authority.
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Gazette to correct my Voter ID?
Not for a minor correction, which can often be requested directly. A genuine name change usually needs recognised proof such as a Gazette.
Does a Gazette update the electoral roll automatically?
No. You submit a correction through the Election Commission's process with the Gazette and documents as proof; the ECI decides.
Should Aadhaar and PAN match my Voter ID?
Ideally yes β€” one consistent name across your records prevents future verification issues.

Normal plan: your Gujarat Gazette within 60 days. Express (extraordinary Gazette): within 30 days β€” counted from the date full payment is received and your application number is generated. Nobody can fix the Government Press’s exact publication date, so instead of a promise we cannot keep, we give you a real remedy: if we miss the window you get a full refund of everything you paid us β€” and we still complete your Gazette at no further service charge. In practice most of our filed gazettes publish within about 15 days of filing; the 60/30-day windows are your written safety net. The guarantee is issued in writing with your quote.
