What's happening
EPFO relies on your UAN being KYC-verified against Aadhaar and PAN. When the name your employer recorded with EPFO doesn't match your Aadhaar, online claims, withdrawals and transfers get held.
Why it happens
- An employer entered your name differently years ago.
- Your name changed (e.g. marriage) but EPFO still shows the old one.
- You've worked under several name variations across employers.
Is a Gujarat Gazette required?
Often, for a genuine change or a substantial difference. A Gazette establishes one consistent name to support the EPFO correction. For a minor clerical difference, an employer attestation or EPFO's own online correction may be quicker.
How to fix it
- Decide the single correct name (usually matching Aadhaar).
- Align Aadhaar and PAN to it if needed.
- Submit the EPFO correction β frequently with employer attestation.
- Proceed with your claim or transfer once KYC matches.
Note
The EPFO correction is decided by EPFO, often with your employer's involvement β we prepare the name documentation to support it, but the outcome rests with them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Correcting EPFO to a name that still differs from Aadhaar.
- Overlooking that employer attestation may be needed.
- Leaving old accounts under different name variations.
