A marriage certificate proves a marriage β but a name change needs more. Here's how the two relate.
A marriage certificate, issued by the Registrar of Marriages, proves that a marriage took place. It's often accepted by some authorities as supporting proof when a woman updates a record to her married surname.
Proving a marriage and formally changing a name are two different things. A certificate supports the change, but for a broadly recognised surname change across documents, a Gujarat Gazette (with a supporting affidavit) is commonly used.
The Registrar of Marriages issues and manages marriage records under its own rules; for registration matters, consult your local registrar. We handle the name-change documentation side.
We prepare the Gazette and, where needed, the joint affidavit, drafted so your maiden name matches your existing records for a clean update. See our name change after marriage service and the marriage vs divorce guide.
Tell us your situation and we'll guide you on the right documentation β including whether a Gazette is even needed.
